What Is Yin Yoga?

Originally called “Daoist” yoga, this particular style of yoga focuses more on passive floor poses with one- to three-minute holds and places emphasis on the meditative aspects of breath and stillness to calm the body and mind. You may be asked to relax in your poses, allowing you to access deeper connective tissue and fascia surrounding joints. Because it softens muscle tissue, Yin yoga is a great way to improve and maintain flexibility. Additionally, when poses are held for longer periods of time, you have the opportunity to relax in the realm of stillness. This is very beneficial for achieving a greater sense of self-awareness as you experience various feelings, emotions, and sensations.

The Benefits Of Yin Yoga

Thanks to its passive meditative approach that requires students to relinquish control, there are several mental and physical benefits associated with this style of yoga. Many students and teachers report the following:

  • Better mental awareness and be present in the moment.
  • Opportunity to slow your mind down to focus on emotions we frequently gloss over.
  • A beneficial way to focus on breathing to trigger our parasympathetic nervous system.
  • Improved flexibility as muscles are stretched and become more pliable.
  • Deeper relaxation as a balance between mental and physical wellbeing is achieved.
  • Improved stamina for longer meditation sessions.

Because there is such a strong connection between the mental and physical benefits that Yin yoga provides, it is often incorporated into treatment programs for various physical and emotional health conditions.
